Full-Day Timeline

7:00 AM

Equipment Fitting

Meet your guide at our Moshi base for bike fitting. Quality mountain bikes with front suspension, helmets, gloves, and safety equipment are provided. A quick safety briefing and practice session ensures everyone is comfortable with their bike before setting off.

Equipment details: Our fleet of well-maintained mountain bikes is suitable for mixed terrain including dirt roads, village paths, and tarmac sections. Helmets are mandatory and included. We also provide water bottles, repair kits, and a support vehicle that follows the group.

8:00 AM

Village Ride Begins

Set off from Moshi through the bustling morning markets where vendors sell fresh produce, spices, and textiles. Cycle through narrow village paths where children wave enthusiastically and local farmers head to their fields with their tools.

The first hour of cycling takes you through the outskirts of Moshi, gradually transitioning from paved roads to rural dirt paths. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle inclines, allowing you to settle into a comfortable rhythm while taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of Tanzanian village life.

9:00 AM

Coffee Farm Visit

Stop at a family-run coffee farm for a tour and fresh coffee tasting. Learn about the journey from bean to cup and meet the farmers who grow some of the world's best Arabica coffee on the fertile slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The coffee farm visit includes a walk through the coffee shrubs, an explanation of the growing and harvesting process, and a tasting session where you can sample freshly brewed Kilimanjaro coffee. The farm is run by a local Chagga family who have been growing coffee for generations.

10:30 AM

Scenic Viewpoint

Arrive at a hilltop viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of Kilimanjaro's glaciated summit, Moshi town spread out below, and the vast Maasai plains stretching towards Arusha. This is the perfect photo opportunity of the day.

The viewpoint is at the highest point of the cycling route. Take time to rest, hydrate, and capture the stunning scenery. Your guide will point out key landmarks including the different peaks of Kilimanjaro and the distant Mount Meru. On clear days, the views extend for over 50 kilometres.

12:00 PM

Local Lunch

Enjoy lunch at a local Chagga guesthouse. Traditional dishes prepared with ingredients sourced directly from the surrounding farms are served with warm hospitality. The meal includes staples like ugali, nyama choma (grilled meat), fresh vegetables, and seasonal fruits.

The guesthouse is a family home that has been welcoming cyclists for years. The dining area is open-air with views of the surrounding gardens. Your hosts will explain the traditional preparation methods and the cultural significance of each dish.

1:30 PM

Afternoon Ride

Continue cycling through more remote villages and farmland. Your guide shares stories about Chagga traditions, local history, and the mountain's cultural significance to the Tanzanian people. The afternoon route takes you through less-travelled paths.

This section of the ride offers the most authentic cultural experience, passing through villages where daily life continues much as it has for centuries. You will see traditional banana beer brewing, women weaving baskets, and children playing along the village paths.

3:30 PM

Return to Moshi

Cycle back to Moshi through the afternoon countryside. The final stretch follows the edge of coffee plantations as the sun begins to lower, casting golden light over the landscape. The return ride is a gentle cruise on mostly flat terrain.

The return journey takes approximately one hour at a relaxed pace. The cooling afternoon breeze and the soft golden light make this the most enjoyable segment of the ride. Your guide will point out any notable landmarks and wildlife along the way.

4:30 PM

Tour Conclusion

Return equipment and enjoy a cold drink with your guide. Receive a small souvenir to remember your cycling adventure. The total cycling distance is approximately 25-30 kilometres over mostly flat to gently rolling terrain.

Your guide will be happy to provide recommendations for other activities in Moshi and can help arrange additional tours if desired. Many cyclists combine this tour with a visit to Chemka Hot Springs the following day for the perfect active-rest combination.
