5-Day Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari

Your primate-focused expedition begins as you head west into the lush landscapes of Kibale National Park. Known as the 'Primate Capital of the World', Kibale is a dense rainforest that protects 13 species of primates. The drive takes you through vibrant villages and vast tea plantations that form a rolling green carpet as far as the eye can see. We arrive at the edge of the forest in the late afternoon. The air is cool and fragrant with the scent of tropical flowers and damp earth. After checking into your lodge, enjoy an evening of relaxation listening to the evening chorus of the forest, preparing for your first primate encounter at dawn.

After an early breakfast and briefing, we step into the primeval canopy of Kibale Forest in search of habituated chimpanzees. Nothing prepares you for the sound of their 'pant-hoots' echoing through the canopy or the sight of them swinging effortlessly through the high branches. Spend an hour observing our closest biological relatives as they forage, play, and interact socially. In the afternoon, we visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a community-led nature walk. Bigodi is a biodiversity hotspot where you can see eight different primate species, including the rare Red Colobus and L'Hoest's monkey, as well as exotic birds like the Great Blue Turaco. It is a day of deep immersion in the world of primates.

We leave the Kibale forest and drive south towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This journey takes us through the northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, offering opportunities to spot elephants, buffalos, and various antelopes along the way. As we ascend into the Kigezi Highlands, the landscape transforms once again into steep, terraced hills and valleys. The views are breathtaking, with mountain ranges stretching into the distant horizon. We arrive at Bwindi in the evening, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most important refuge for mountain gorillas on Earth. Enjoy a quiet evening by the fire, reflecting on the chimpanzee experience and preparing for the ultimate trek tomorrow.

Today is the highlight of your safari. After a vital briefing from the park rangers, you'll be assigned to a gorilla group and head into the thick, tangled heart of the rainforest. The trek can be intensive, involving navigating through thick undergrowth and climbing steep slopes, but the reward is beyond measure. When you finally come face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas, time stands still. You spend one profound hour in their presence, observing the gentle silverback, the attentive mothers, and the playful juveniles. Their human-like eyes and gentle nature will leave you with a profound sense of connection to the natural world. In the afternoon, we visit the local Batwa community to learn about their ancient forest culture.

On our final day, we begin our descent from the gorilla highlands and start the long drive back to the capital. We pass through the pastoral landscapes of Mbarara, stopping for a traditional lunch. We cross the Equator once more, providing a final geographical landmark and a chance for photos. This journey across the south-western pulse of Uganda allows you to reflect on the two extraordinary primate encounters you've experienced. We arrive in Entebbe or Kampala by early evening, where your guide will transfer you to the airport or your hotel. You leave with a deeper understanding of our primate cousins and memories of the mists of Bwindi that will last a lifetime.
