Everything you need to know before planning your Tanzania safari, Kilimanjaro climb, or Zanzibar beach holiday
The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater are the top choices for first-time safari-goers. The Serengeti offers the Great Migration and incredible wildlife densities, while Ngorongoro provides guaranteed big-five sightings in a compact, breathtaking setting. For a shorter trip, Lake Manyara and Tarangire offer excellent game viewing close to Arusha.
The Marangu Route (also known as the Coca-Cola Route) is considered the easiest Kilimanjaro climbing route — it's the only route with hut accommodation and has a gradual slope. The Rongai Route is also a good option for beginners. Both have high success rates, but proper acclimatization is still essential regardless of route choice.
For a comprehensive Tanzania safari experience, we recommend 7 to 10 days. A 5-day short safari covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro, while a 7 to 10-day itinerary allows you to explore the Serengeti in depth, visit the remote parks like Ruaha or Selous, and even add a Zanzibar beach extension.
The best time to visit Zanzibar is June to October (dry season) and December to February (short dry season). These months offer sunny skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for snorkeling, diving, and beach activities. The long rains (March-May) and short rains (November) bring fewer crowds but can disrupt travel plans.
Absolutely! Many travelers combine a Kilimanjaro trek with a Tanzania safari. A 12 to 16-day itinerary is ideal: 7 to 9 days climbing Kilimanjaro followed by 5 to 7 days exploring the northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara). You can also add Zanzibar for beach recovery after your climb.
Yes, US citizens need a visa to enter Tanzania. You can apply for an eVisa online before travel (recommended) or obtain a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Dar es Salaam, or Zanzibar. The standard tourist visa costs around $50-$100 USD depending on nationality and is valid for single entry up to 90 days.
