4-Day Chimpanzee & Lake Kivu Adventure Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – The Deep South: Kigali to Nyungwe & Canopy Walkway

Your private guide will meet you at your Kigali hotel at 7:00 AM. We begin the 5-hour drive south toward Nyungwe National Park. The journey is one of the most scenic in Rwanda, passing through the historic city of Huye (formerly Butare), where we stop at the Ethnographic Museum—one of Africa's best displays of traditional architecture, weaving, and royal history. After a traditional Rwandan lunch, we continue through the rolling hills of Nyanza, eventually entering the dark, lush canopy of Nyungwe.

Upon arrival at the Uwinka Visitor Center, we embark on the famous Canopy Walkway. This 160-meter long suspended bridge offers an incredible perspective of the rainforest. You'll walk among the treetops, 60 meters above the forest floor, seeing orchids, rare mosses, and various primate species from above. Day 2 – Primate Encounter: Chimpanzee Trekking & Transfer to Lake Kivu

Today begins early with a 5:00 AM briefing at the park headquarters. Chimpanzee trekking is an exhilarating experience; these primates are mobile and vocal. Your expert guide and trackers will lead you through the moist forest trails. Once found, you have one hour to observe them as they communicate, hunt for food, and groom each other. It's a high-energy encounter that requires a good level of fitness.

After the trek, we return to the lodge for lunch and then begin the 3-hour drive north along the shores of Lake Kivu. This route is part of the Congo Nile Trail, offering spectacular views of the lake's many islands and the mountains of Congo just across the water. We arrive in the beautiful town of Kibuye in time for a sundowner on the deck of your lakeside resort.

Day 3 – Lake Kivu Island Exploration & Napoleon's Flight

We hike to the top of the island (moderate difficulty) for the best 360-degree views of the lake. We continue to Amahoro Island (Peace Island) for a picnic lunch or a drink at the small beach bar.
