The Deep South: Kigali to Nyungwe & Canopy Walkway
Your private guide will meet you at your Kigali hotel at 7:00 AM. We begin the 5-hour drive south toward Nyungwe National Park. The journey is one of the most scenic in Rwanda, passing through the historic city of Huye (formerly Butare), where we stop at the Ethnographic Museum — one of Africa's finest displays of traditional architecture, weaving, and royal history.
Primate Encounter: Chimpanzee Trekking & Transfer to Lake Kivu
Today begins early with a 5:00 AM briefing at the park headquarters. Chimpanzee trekking is an exhilarating experience — these primates are mobile and vocal. Your expert guide and trackers will lead you through the moist forest trails. Once found, you have one hour to observe them as they communicate, hunt for food, and groom each other.
Lake Kivu Island Exploration & Napoleon's Flight
After a leisurely breakfast overlooking the water, we board a private motorboat for a morning exploration of Lake Kivu. Our destination is Napoleon Island, named for its silhouette which resembles the French emperor's hat. We hike to the top of the island for the best 360-degree views of the lake.
Seed to Cup: Coffee Tour & Return to Kigali
On our final morning, we visit a local coffee plantation on one of the lake's islands. Rwanda produces some of the world's best specialty coffee. You will participate in the "Seed to Cup" experience, seeing how beans are harvested, washed, dried, and roasted over an open fire.

Chimpanzee trekking requires a moderate to high level of fitness. The terrain is steep, muddy, and humid. Treks can last 2-5 hours depending on the chimps' location. Participants should be comfortable walking on uneven forest trails. Porters are available at the park headquarters for assistance.
What is the best time for this Rwanda safari?
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the best conditions for chimpanzee trekking with firmer trails and easier hiking. The rainy seasons bring lush landscapes and fewer crowds but more challenging conditions. Chimpanzee trekking is available year-round.
What should I pack for a chimpanzee trekking safari?
Pack waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against nettles, a rain jacket, gardening gloves for gripping vegetation, insect repellent, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, binoculars, a camera with extra batteries, and at least 2 litres of water per person.

Yes, Lake Kivu is one of the few Great Lakes in Africa that is bilharzia-free and completely safe for swimming. The calm, clear waters around Kibuye offer excellent swimming conditions. Our boat cruise includes time for swimming at Amahoro Island's beach.
