Day 1 – Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your Rwanda safari adventure begins upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, where you will be warmly welcomed by your professional safari guide. After a short briefing about the safari itinerary and activities ahead, the journey begins with a guided city tour of Kigali.

Kigali is widely recognized as one of the most organized and cleanest cities in Africa. The city offers visitors a blend of modern development, vibrant culture, and deep historical significance. One of the most important stops during the city tour is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a powerful and moving place that commemorates the victims of the 1994 genocide. Visiting this memorial provides travelers with a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history, resilience, and remarkable recovery over the past decades.

After visiting the memorial, guests may explore local craft markets where artisans sell handmade baskets, wood carvings, paintings, and traditional jewelry. These markets offer a great opportunity to interact with local communities and purchase authentic Rwandan souvenirs.

Following lunch at a local restaurant in Kigali, the safari continues with a scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park, located in northern Rwanda near the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours and passes through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside. Along the way, travelers will see rolling green hills, terraced farmland, banana plantations, and traditional villages that showcase the daily life of rural Rwanda.

As you approach Volcanoes National Park, the dramatic volcanic mountains begin to appear on the horizon. The park forms part of the Virunga Mountain range, a chain of ancient volcanoes that create one of Africa’s most spectacular natural landscapes.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The highlight of your safari begins early in the morning with breakfast at the lodge before transferring to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi. This is where all gorilla trekking activities begin.

Upon arrival, visitors attend an important briefing conducted by park rangers. During this session, guests receive detailed information about gorilla trekking procedures, safety guidelines, and conservation rules set by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Visitors are also assigned to small groups and allocated a specific gorilla family to track.

Volcanoes National Park is home to several habituated gorilla families that have become accustomed to human presence through careful conservation efforts. Each group is limited to a small number of visitors per day in order to protect the gorillas and minimize stress on the animals.

After the briefing, the trekking adventure begins. Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, visitors hike into the forest in search of the gorilla family assigned to them. The trek can take anywhere between one and five hours, depending on where the gorillas are located that day.

The hike takes visitors through beautiful bamboo forests, dense vegetation, and volcanic terrain while guides share fascinating insights about the park’s ecosystem and wildlife.

Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed one hour to observe them. This moment is truly unforgettable. Guests can watch the gorillas as they feed on vegetation, groom each other, play, and interact within their family groups. The dominant silverback gorilla usually watches over the group while younger gorillas climb trees and play nearby.

This close encounter with mountain gorillas is often described as one of the most emotional and powerful wildlife experiences in the world.

After the trekking experience, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.

Later in the afternoon, visit the nearby Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where members of the local community demonstrate traditional Rwandan culture. Visitors can enjoy traditional dances, music performances, storytelling, and demonstrations of how people lived in Rwanda before modern times.

Your guide will then transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your unforgettable Rwanda gorilla trekking safari.
