Kigali – Volcanoes National Park

4-Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Tour

Overview

This extraordinary 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Safari offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter two of Rwanda's most iconic and endangered primates — the majestic mountain gorillas and the rare, playful golden monkeys — deep within the breathtaking wilderness of Volcanoes National Park. Nestled within Rwanda's dramatic Virunga Mountain range in the northwest of the country, Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa's most critically important conservation areas, protecting lush bamboo forests, ancient volcanic slopes, and one of the world's largest remaining populations of critically endangered mountain gorillas — fewer than 1,100 individuals survive globally.

The adventure begins in Kigali — one of Africa's cleanest, safest, and most rapidly developing capital cities — where visitors gain a deeply moving and profound understanding of Rwanda's extraordinary history, cultural richness, and remarkable national transformation through a guided city tour that includes the emotionally powerful Kigali Genocide Memorial, vibrant local craft markets, and a guided tour through the city's modern business districts and residential neighborhoods.

From Kigali, the journey moves north through Rwanda's beautifully terraced countryside — the famous Land of a Thousand Hills — to the misty slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Here, in forests that inspired Dian Fossey's legendary mountain gorilla research, you will spend an unprecedented, privileged, and deeply emotional hour sitting quietly among a habituated gorilla family — one of the most profound and life-changing wildlife encounters available anywhere on Earth. Powerful silverback males, nurturing mothers cradling their infants, and inquisitive juveniles tumbling playfully through the bamboo create memories that last a lifetime.

On the final morning, the safari returns to the park's emerald bamboo forests to track the energetic, spectacularly coloured golden monkeys — a rare primate species found exclusively in the Virunga region of central Africa, known for their remarkable golden-orange fur, their incredible agility through the bamboo canopy, and their fascinating, highly sociable family dynamics. An afternoon cultural immersion at the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village — where former poachers have transformed their lives into cultural ambassadors — provides a deeply heartwarming and uplifting conclusion to this unforgettable Rwanda primate safari.

Your experienced guide will use the drive to share fascinating insights about Rwanda's rich agricultural heritage, including the cultivation of pyrethrum flowers, Irish potatoes, and the region's famous tea estates, as well as introducing you to the fascinating culture and traditions of the communities that have coexisted with the mountain gorillas for generations.

Day 3 – Gorilla Trekking — The Ultimate Wildlife Encounter

Today is the absolute, undisputed highlight of your entire Rwanda safari — the deeply emotional, endlessly memorable, and profoundly humbling experience of gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Rise before dawn for an early breakfast, then transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi village for official registration and a comprehensive briefing from highly experienced park rangers.

During the rangers' briefing you will learn everything you need to know:

  • Gorilla Conservation: The remarkable story of how Rwanda's mountain gorillas were brought back from the brink of extinction through decades of dedicated conservation work, strict anti-poaching efforts, and community conservation programmes.
  • Trekking Rules & Wildlife Safety: Essential guidelines including maintaining a minimum 7-metre distance from the gorillas at all times, how to respond if a silverback charges, voice and movement protocols, and photography guidelines.
  • Gorilla Behaviour: Key information about gorilla family structure, silverback dominance, infant development, feeding behaviour, and knuckle-walking locomotion that will enrich your immensely once you encounter them in the wild.

Your group — a maximum of only 8 visitors — is assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family. The trekking experience varies considerably depending on the gorillas' location on any particular day and may take between 1 and 5 hours of hiking through extraordinary terrain including:

  • Thick, atmospheric bamboo forest with shafts of golden morning light filtering through the canopy
  • Steep volcanic slopes carpeted in dense Hagenia woodland and wild Senecio plants
  • Beautiful montane rainforest draped in lichen, mosses, and flowering wild orchids

Once the gorilla family is located, an incredible, time-suspended one hour is spent quietly observing them at remarkably close range. During this unforgettable encounter you may witness:

  • Tender mothers gently cradling and grooming their tiny, wide-eyed infants
  • Boisterous, mischievous juveniles performing acrobatic somersaults through the vegetation
  • The immensely powerful, majestic silverback male resting, feeding, or displaying his authority
  • Entire family groups moving through the forest, foraging for bamboo shoots, wild celery, and fruit

After the trek, return to the lodge for a celebratory gourmet lunch. In the afternoon, visit the extraordinary Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village — an innovative community conservation project where former poachers have transformed their lives into passionate cultural ambassadors, sharing Rwanda's living heritage through spectacular traditional Intore warrior dance performances, traditional music and storytelling, traditional medicine demonstrations, and guided tours of traditional Rwandan homesteads.

Day 4 – Golden Monkey Tracking & Departure to Kigali

After another fortifying early breakfast, return to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your second extraordinary primate encounter — the spectacular and highly rewarding Golden Monkey Tracking experience. The endangered golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is a rare and strikingly beautiful primate species found only in the bamboo forests of the Albertine Rift's Virunga Mountain region, classified as endangered by the IUCN and protected within Volcanoes National Park.

These utterly charming primates are instantly recognisable by their magnificent golden-orange patches on their backs and flanks that contrast brilliantly with their jet-black limbs and face, their extraordinary agility and athleticism through the bamboo forest canopy, and their highly sociable, playful nature that makes them incredibly entertaining and endlessly photogenic subjects. The golden monkey trek is generally shorter and less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, making it an accessible and truly joyful complement to the previous day's gorilla encounter.

In their bamboo forest habitat, golden monkeys live in large, boisterous groups of up to 80 individuals that move energetically through the forest, crashing through bamboo stems, leaping between swaying culms, and engaging in complex social interactions including play-fighting, elaborate grooming sessions, and vocal communication. The experience offers outstanding wildlife photography opportunities, particularly in the beautiful dappled morning light filtering through the bamboo groves.

After completing the exhilarating golden monkey tracking experience, return to the lodge for a leisurely farewell lunch. Begin the scenic, comfortable drive back south to Kigali through Rwanda's beautiful countryside. Depending on your international flight schedule, optional stops may include a visit to a local artisan cooperative or craft market in Musanze before your comfortable airport transfer, concluding an absolutely extraordinary and deeply memorable 4-day Rwanda primate safari.
