1. The Crown Jewel: Mountain Gorilla Trekking

The singular most iconic experience in Rwanda is undoubtedly tracking the endangered **Mountain Gorillas** in **Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans)**. Situated in the northwest of the country, this park protects the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Massif—a chain of six dormant and two active volcanoes that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC.

There are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild, and Rwanda is home to about a third of them. Tracking these gentle giants is a highly regulated, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With only 96 permits issued per day, the experience remains intimate and exclusive. You will hike through bamboo forests and thick volcanic soil, led by expert rangers who know the individual families by name. Once you locate the troop, you have exactly one hour to observe their social interactions, the playfulness of the infants, and the imposing presence of the silverback.

2. Nyungwe National Park: A Primate Paradise

In the southwest lies **Nyungwe National Park**, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. This ancient montane forest is a biological treasure trove, housing 13 different species of primates, including the energetic **Common Chimpanzee**. Nyungwe is also the only place in the world where you can see super-groups of **Angolan Black and White Colobus monkeys**, sometimes numbering over 400 individuals.

Beyond primate tracking, Nyungwe is famous for the **Canopy Walkway**—a suspension bridge that hangs 70 meters above the forest floor, offering a unique perspective on the forest's multi-layered ecosystem. It is an essential stop for birdwatchers, with over 300 species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics.

3. Akagera National Park: The Big Five Return

Rwanda's safari circuit is completed by **Akagera National Park**. After a period of decline in the 1990s, Akagera has undergone a miraculous restoration. With the reintroduction of lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, the park is once again a **Big Five destination**.

Unlike the mountainous west, Akagera is defined by rolling savannahs, acacia woodlands, and a complex system of lakes and papyrus swamps. It offers a classic East African safari experience, including game drives and boat safaris on Lake Ihema, where hippos, crocodiles, and an incredible array of waterbirds can be seen.

4. Lake Kivu & Cultural Heritage
