Experience the thrill of a classic African savannah safari on this expertly designed 3-Day Akagera National Park Safari — Rwanda's only Big Five wildlife sanctuary and the country's largest national park, covering 1,122 magnificent square kilometres of sweeping open savannah grasslands, tranquil lakes, rolling woodlands, and extensive papyrus swamps in the scenic Eastern Province bordering Tanzania.
Akagera National Park is one of Africa's great conservation success stories. After years of decline following the 1994 genocide, when a significant portion of the park was converted to refugee resettlement, the park has undergone an extraordinary resurgence under the joint management of the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks — a leading international conservation non-profit. Lions, locally extinct since the early 1990s, were successfully reintroduced from South Africa in 2015. Black rhinos, hunted to local extinction, were reintroduced in 2017 and 2021, completing the Big Five. Today, Akagera's wildlife populations are thriving, its community relations are exemplary, and the park is widely recognised as one of the most effectively managed protected areas in all of Africa.
The park's extraordinary biodiversity is evident from the very first game drive. Massive elephant herds lumber through musasa woodland, regal Maasai giraffe browse the flat-topped acacia canopy, towering Cape buffalo graze the open flood plains in enormous, dust-raising herds, and recently reintroduced lions and black rhinos are increasingly spotted during guided game drives with knowledgeable ranger-guides. The park's extensive lake system — including Lakes Akagera, Rwanyakazinga, Shakani, and Mihindi — supports enormous pods of hippopotamus, massive Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds representing over 525 recorded bird species — making Akagera one of Africa's premier birding destinations.
The acclaimed boat safari on Lake Ihema — Rwanda's second-largest lake — is perhaps the most unique and thrilling wildlife activity in Akagera, offering a completely different perspective on the park's extraordinary wildlife from the calm waters of this beautiful lake. Aboard a motorised boat with a trained ranger guide, you will drift silently past enormous pods of 50+ hippopotami wallowing in the shallows, observe massive Nile crocodiles basking on muddy banks, and watch dozens of spectacular waterbird species including the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork, saddle-billed stork, African spoonbill, and the Goliath heron — Africa's largest heron. Sunset over Lake Ihema, with hippos grunting in the foreground and flocks of ibis silhouetted against the golden sky, is among the most beautiful natural spectacles Rwanda has to offer.

Enjoy a celebratory picnic lunch served out in the open bush before continuing your afternoon game drive through the park's less-visited northern sector, where the density of wildlife can be extraordinary and road conditions are more challenging. Rise before dawn for one final, utterly magical sunrise game drive as Akagera awakens in spectacular fashion around you. The early morning in Akagera is truly exceptional — as the sun breaks over the eastern Tanzanian hills, flooding the savannah with extraordinary warm golden light, predators complete their final hunting activities of the night, enormous elephant herds move toward water sources, and giraffe raise their elegant necks above the acacia tops to catch the first rays of morning sun. This is prime photography time and the most emotionally powerful moment to be sitting quietly in the open savannah with Africa surrounding you completely.
After approximately 2–3 hours of spectacular dawn game driving through the park's most active areas, return to camp for a hearty farewell breakfast with your guide and fellow travelers. Settle bills, exchange contact details with the wonderful camp staff, pack your safari bags, and begin the comfortable drive back to Kigali.
