Akagera National Park is one of Africa's great conservation success stories. After years of decline following the 1994 genocide, when a significant portion of the park was converted to refugee resettlement, the park has undergone an extraordinary resurgence under the joint management of the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks — a leading international conservation non-profit. Lions, locally extinct since the early 1990s, were successfully reintroduced from South Africa in 2015. Black rhinos, hunted to local extinction, were reintroduced in 2017 and 2021, completing the Big Five. Today, Akagera's wildlife populations are thriving, its community relations are exemplary, and the park is widely recognised as one of the most effectively managed protected areas in all of Africa.
The park's extraordinary biodiversity is evident from the very first game drive. Massive elephant herds lumber through musasa woodland, regal Maasai giraffe browse the flat-topped acacia canopy, towering Cape buffalo graze the open flood plains in enormous, dust-raising herds, and recently reintroduced lions and black rhinos are increasingly spotted during guided game drives with knowledgeable ranger-guides. Rise before dawn for one final, utterly magical sunrise game drive as Akagera awakens in spectacular fashion around you. The early morning in Akagera is truly exceptional — as the sun breaks over the eastern Tanzanian hills, flooding the savannah with extraordinary warm golden light, predators complete their final hunting activities of the night, enormous elephant herds move toward water sources, and giraffe raise their elegant necks above the acacia tops to catch the first rays of morning sun. This is prime photography time and the most emotionally powerful moment to be sitting quietly in the open savannah with Africa surrounding you completely.
After approximately 2–3 hours of spectacular dawn game driving through the park's most active areas, return to camp for a hearty farewell breakfast with your guide and fellow travelers. The 2.5 hour return drive through Eastern Rwanda's beautiful countryside provides a final opportunity to reflect on three extraordinary days of Big Five safari adventure in Akagera.
