Fast, elusive and remarkably powerful for its size, the caracal is one of Africa’s most fascinating small wild cats. Recognized by its reddish-tawny coat and dramatic black ear tufts, this solitary predator stalks rodents, hares and birds before exploding into action with spectacular leaps that can carry it more than two metres into the air.
The caracal is a medium-sized wild cat famous for its long black ear tufts, powerful hind legs, reddish-tawny coat and extraordinary ability to leap high into the air to catch birds. Despite the nickname “African lynx,” the caracal is not a lynx. Molecular evidence places it in its own genus, Caracal, where it is closely related to the African golden cat and serval. The IUCN Cat Specialist Group describes it as the largest of Africa’s small cats.
The long black tufts make the caracal immediately recognizable. The name comes from the Turkish karakulak, roughly “black ear.” The ears are black on the back and carry tufts of black hair reaching about 4–5 cm. Their exact function is not fully settled, but they are clearly involved in visual signaling and make the species distinctive; the caracal also has excellent hearing for detecting prey movement.

The IUCN CatSG gives weight approximately 6–18 kg, body length approximately 80–100 cm and tail length approximately 20–34 cm, with males generally larger than females. The coat is usually tawny, reddish-brown or brick-red, paler underneath; adults normally lack obvious body spots, with characteristic dark markings around the eyes and nose and white facial patches. Melanistic (unusually dark) individuals have also been documented.
The often-quoted 80 km/h figure should not be presented as a definitive scientific fact — reliable sources don’t provide a sufficiently robust maximum-speed measurement. A better statement: the caracal is a powerful short-distance runner, but its exact maximum speed is not reliably established.
Caracals can leap around two metres or more into the air to intercept birds taking off — one of the most spectacular hunting behaviors among Africa’s smaller cats. The sequence: a bird on the ground → the caracal stalks → the bird launches → the caracal springs vertically → forepaws strike the bird. They can even take surprisingly large birds such as guinea fowl and francolins.
Caracals are highly adaptable, occupying savanna, grassland, scrubland, semi-desert, dry and moist woodland, steppes, mountain environments, rocky hills, desert wadis and forest edges. They prefer open or semi-open habitats with vegetation cover. Importantly, they do not inhabit true deserts or tropical rainforests — they need some combination of vegetation, prey, cover, rocky terrain and shrubland, and can survive in very dry environments but not completely barren ones.
Caracals can occur at high elevations — recorded around 2,500 m in Ethiopia and, in rare cases, up to about 3,300 m. They are well adapted to dry environments and can obtain much of their moisture from prey, so the old “reliable water is essential” claim is too absolute; water still matters because prey often concentrates around it.
The caracal has a very broad distribution across Africa (southern, east, north and parts of west and central) and extends through the Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Central Asia and northwestern India. Remove the old “found primarily in Tanzania” wording — Tanzania is genuinely part of the range, but the species is far more widespread.
Caracals occur across suitable habitats in Tanzania as part of their wider African distribution. The IUCN CatSG notes they are common on livestock lands in East Africa. But we should not call Tanzania “the primary range” — it is one region within a continent-wide distribution.
Caracals are predominantly nocturnal and can also be active at dawn, dusk or daytime depending on temperature, habitat and human disturbance. Remove rigid “6am–10am / 10–3pm / 3–6pm” schedules. Sighting likelihood is best described as uncommon / opportunistic: a guide may encounter one, but no operator should guarantee it. Tarangire, Ruaha, Ngorongoro and the broader Serengeti ecosystem hold suitable habitat, but “High” sighting ratings for specific parks should be removed.
Adult caracals are solitary and territorial. The main exceptions are a temporary male–female association during mating and a mother–kitten unit while kittens are dependent; once independent, young disperse to establish their own territories. Remove unsupported “often found in groups” and group-living claims. Males generally have larger home ranges than females, and male territories can overlap several female ranges; ranges become much larger in arid environments because prey is dispersed.

Contrary to the old “single young” claim, caracal litters can contain 1–6 kittens (IUCN CatSG), with 1–4 a useful practical range and larger litters more associated with captivity; SANBI reports an average of about two. Gestation lasts approximately 68–81 days (~2–2.5 months). Females give birth in concealed locations — caves, dense vegetation, tree cavities, abandoned burrows.
The mother provides essentially all care. Young begin eating meat at about 4 weeks and are weaned around 4–6 months; they become independent at roughly 9–10 months. Reproductive maturity is around 12–15 months for males and 14–16 months for females. There is no cooperative adult family group — the normal unit is mother plus dependent kittens.
Caracals are strict, opportunistic carnivore generalists. Small mammals — rodents, hares, hyraxes — are among the most important prey, alongside birds (doves, guinea fowl, francolins, partridges), reptiles, small antelope and young antelope, and invertebrates. They can occasionally kill prey two to three times their own body mass (e.g., young kudu or gazelles), but most everyday prey is much smaller. Their hunting system combines stealth, hearing, explosive acceleration and vertical jumping.
They stalk, get close, explode forward, grab prey and deliver a killing bite (neck bite for small prey; suffocation/throat bite for larger). They are capable climbers and may cache larger kills in trees, but unlike leopards they do not routinely hoist kills — they may instead cover unfinished carcasses with soil and return later.

Molecular evidence places the caracal, African golden cat (Caracal aurata) and serval in the same broader Caracal lineage. The golden cat is a compact forest specialist; the serval is long-legged with a spotted coat associated with wetlands/grasslands; the caracal is more robust, reddish/tawny, with black ear tufts and drier habitats.
The caracal is dramatically smaller — a lion can weigh several times more. The caracal survives through stealth, agility, nocturnal behavior and habitat flexibility rather than physical dominance.
Adult caracals are themselves predators, but can occasionally be killed by larger carnivores such as lions, leopards and spotted hyenas where ranges overlap; these should be described as potential competitors/predators, not routine predators. Black-backed jackals can compete directly for prey, space and food resources.
The caracal is currently listed as Least Concern globally — this part of the existing page was correct. But Least Concern globally does not mean safe everywhere: it is threatened locally in parts of North Africa, rare in some Middle Eastern countries, declining in some Asian range states, and more secure in parts of southern Africa.
Agriculture, settlements and infrastructure destroy habitat.

Caracals can occasionally prey on sheep, goats, poultry and young livestock; when wild prey is scarce, livestock predation can rise and trigger retaliation. Better solutions include stronger enclosures, better husbandry, predator-proof night housing, monitoring and community conservation, rather than simply removing predators. Because caracals consume rodents and other small mammals, they can even provide natural pest control — protecting predators can sometimes benefit farms.
Hunting and trade are regulated in Tanzania, but we should not claim that a specific agency monitors all Tanzanian caracal populations without a published program to cite. Conservation depends on maintaining suitable habitat, protecting prey, reducing human-wildlife conflict and effective wildlife management across protected and community landscapes.
