What Is the African Rock Python?
The African Rock Python (Python sebae) is a large constricting python of savanna, woodland, wetlands and river and lake margins. Tanzania is part of its broader sub-Saharan African distribution.

- Savanna, woodland and wetlands
- River and lake margins, grassland and forest edges
- Areas with cover and sufficient prey
Occupies cover-rich mosaics, not open dune fields as core habitat.
Diet and Hunting
Diet includes rodents, birds, reptiles, fish, monkeys, larger mammals, antelope and other vertebrate prey. Hunts as an ambush predator using heat-sensing pits to strike, then constricts and swallows prey whole. Not described as crushing prey.
Behaviour
Generally solitary outside reproduction. Local movement possible; not a seasonal migrant.
Reproduction
Oviparous. The female lays eggs from which young hatch and are independent. Young are not nursed with milk and do not form a single-young family unit.
Where to See & Conservation
Possible in suitable savanna and wetland margins where prey is abundant, but encounters are rare and never guaranteed. Near Threatened globally — threats include habitat degradation, prey reduction, persecution and skin and meat trade and human conflict.
