What Is the Pancake Tortoise?
The Pancake Tortoise (Malacochersus tornieri), also called Tornier’s Tortoise or Crevice Tortoise, is an extremely flattened, flexible-shelled East African tortoise specialized for living around rocky outcrops and crevices. Its wedge-shaped, light body lets it fit deep into rock cracks and brace against rocks rather than relying only on withdrawing into a rounded shell.

- Rock crevices and dry savanna with semi-arid rocky landscapes
- Thorny and open habitats adjacent to rocks
Occurs in rocky mosaics, not in flowing-water habitats.
Diet
Primarily herbivorous: grasses, leaves, forbs, flowers, succulent vegetation and available plant material.
Behaviour
Activity varies with temperature and local weather. Not group-living, not nocturnally scheduled by fixed hours and not water-seeking. How it escapes predators: it runs toward rocky refuges and wedges itself into cracks.
Reproduction & Conservation
Oviparous. The female digs a nest, lays eggs, covers them and leaves. No nursing with milk or prolonged parental care. Critically Endangered (CR) globally — replaces every old Vulnerable reference. Threats include illegal collection, pet trade, habitat degradation, destruction of rocky refuges, farming, specialized habitat requirements, low reproductive output and handling disturbance.
