Amboseli National Park

Kenya

Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya on the border with Tanzania, about four hours by road from Nairobi. At 392 km² it is compact, but it offers one of the most recognisable views in Africa: elephants crossing open plains with Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them.

The park is famous for its elephants, some of the largest-tusked in Africa and among the most studied anywhere. Underground water from Kilimanjaro feeds a series of swamps that stay green all year, drawing elephant, buffalo, hippo, zebra and wildebeest, along with lion, cheetah and hyena. More than 400 bird species have been recorded.

The mountain is clearest at dawn and dusk, so early game drives are well worth the effort. The driest months, June to October and January to February, give the best game viewing. Amboseli pairs naturally with the Masai Mara and the Rift Valley lakes on a Kenya safari.
