Mount Meru

Tanzania

Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain at 4,566 metres. It stands inside Arusha National Park, less than an hour from Arusha town, and is one of the most rewarding treks in East Africa: quieter than Kilimanjaro, rich in wildlife, and with a spectacular final ridge walk to Socialist Peak.

The climb follows the Momella Route and takes 3 or 4 days, sleeping in mountain huts at Miriakamba (2,514 m) and Saddle Hut (3,570 m). Because the lower slopes are home to buffalo, giraffe, colobus monkeys and occasionally elephant, every group is accompanied by an armed park ranger as well as a guide. The summit attempt starts in the early hours so that you reach the crater rim for sunrise over Kilimanjaro.

Meru is steeper than it looks and should not be underestimated, but it is excellent acclimatisation and many climbers do it in the days before Kilimanjaro to improve their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. The best months are June to February, avoiding the long rains of March to May.
