Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Its summit, Uhuru Peak, stands at 5,895 metres, and Kilimanjaro National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. No technical climbing is needed, which makes it the most accessible of the Seven Summits, but the altitude is serious and the right route and pace make the difference.
There are six main routes. Marangu is the only one with hut accommodation and takes 5 to 6 days. Machame, the most popular, is a scenic 6 to 7 day camping route with good acclimatisation. Lemosho approaches from the west over 7 to 8 days and has some of the highest summit success rates. Rongai climbs from the drier northern side, Umbwe is the steepest and most direct, and the Northern Circuit is the longest at 9 to 10 days.
The climb passes through five ecological zones, from cultivated foothills and rainforest to moorland, alpine desert and the arctic summit. The best months are January to mid-March and June to October. We are based in Moshi at the foot of the mountain, and every climb is led by licensed local guides with a full support crew of porters and a cook.
