7 days · Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania · Umbwe Route · Strenuous

Tour Overview

The 7-day Umbwe Route is Kilimanjaro's steepest route, but offers spectacular scenery and far fewer hikers than other routes. Extending the climb to 7 days optimally supports acclimatization, boosting your summit chances. Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your trip, day by day

D1

Day 1: Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp (1,800m – 2,950m)

Umbwe Cave Camp (2.950 m)

The tour begins at Umbwe Gate, where you register and are greeted by your guide team. The climb through dense rainforest takes about 4–5 hours and is steep but scenically beautiful. Moss, ferns, waterfalls and exotic birds accompany you on the way to the first camp.

D2

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (2,950m – 3,950m)

Barranco Camp (3.950 m)

After breakfast you climb through rainforest and alpine heath to Barranco Camp. Along the way you pass lava fields and small streams. The hike takes about 5–6 hours. In the afternoon you reach Barranco Camp and rest for the next day.

D3

Day 3: Acclimatization Day – Barranco Camp / Barranco Wall Climbing Practice

Barranco Camp (3.950 m)

An important day for acclimatization: you climb the famous Barranco Wall, a moderate scramble with spectacular views. After this exercise you return to camp to rest. The additional altitude adjustment reduces the risk of altitude sickness on summit day.

D4

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,950m – 4,200m)

Karanga Camp (4.200 m)

The climb takes you through the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp. The hike takes about 4–5 hours, partly steep, through lava fields and alpine vegetation. You enjoy views of the summit region and prepare for the ascent to Barafu Camp.

D5

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,200m – 4,600m)

Barafu Camp (4.600 m)

Today's route takes you to Barafu Camp, the starting point for the summit climb. The hike takes 4–5 hours through rocky lava fields and alpine highland. At Barafu Camp you refuel, rest, and prepare for the night summit tour.

D6

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp (4,600m – 5,895m – 3,100m)

Mweka Camp (3.100 m)

The summit tour begins very early in the morning, usually around midnight. Equipped with headlamps you hike through rocky lava fields and steep sections to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The sunrise over the African landscape is breathtaking. After the summit you first descend to Barafu Camp, eat something, and then continue to Mweka Camp, through lush vegetation and mountain forest.

D7

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha (3,100m – 1,860m)

Moshi / Arusha

On the last day you hike 3–4 hours back to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Afterwards, transfer to Arusha or your hotel, where your 7-day Umbwe Kilimanjaro tour ends — an unforgettable adventure full of scenic diversity, physical challenge and triumphant summit experiences.
