Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers 321 km² of ancient mountain rainforest in south-western Uganda and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. It shelters roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, making it the leading gorilla trekking destination in Africa.
Trekking takes place from four sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, each with its own habituated gorilla families and lodges. After a morning briefing, groups of up to eight people follow rangers and trackers into the forest. The trek can last from one hour to most of the day on steep, sometimes muddy trails, and you then spend one hour with the gorillas. Permits are limited each day and need to be booked ahead.
Beyond gorillas, Bwindi has around 350 bird species, forest walks to waterfalls, and community visits with the Batwa people. It is reached by a full day's drive from Kampala or Entebbe, often broken at Lake Mburo, or by a short flight to Kihihi or Kisoro. June to August and December to February are the driest months for trekking.
