Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park lies in north-west Rwanda, about two and a half hours by road from Kigali, and protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga Mountains. It is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas, and the park where Dian Fossey carried out her research.

Gorilla trekking starts early from the park headquarters at Kinigi. Groups of up to eight visitors are assigned to one habituated gorilla family and hike through bamboo and forest with trackers and rangers. The walk can take from under an hour to several hours depending on where the gorillas are, and once you find them you spend one hour in their company. Trekkers must be at least 15 years old, and permits are limited, so they should be reserved well in advance.

The park also offers golden monkey tracking, the hike to Dian Fossey's grave and research site, and climbs of Mount Bisoke with its crater lake. Trekking is possible all year, with the driest conditions from June to September and December to February. We secure the permits and handle transport and accommodation.
