The Gateway to 1,000 Hills: Arrival & Kigali Immersion
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your African Majestic Adventures driver-guide. Your first introduction to Rwanda is through its clean, hilly capital. We visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, a site of profound historical importance that provides essential context for Rwanda's modern-day unity and progress. This visit is a deeply moving experience that sets the stage for understanding the country's incredible resilience. Morning: Arrive at Kigali International Airport. After clearing customs and immigration, your African Majestic Adventures guide will greet you and escort you to your private 4x4 vehicle. Enjoy a brief introductory drive through Kigali's clean, tree-lined streets as your guide shares insights into Rwanda's remarkable recovery and development. Afternoon: Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi — a UNESCO-registered site that honours the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The memorial's three permanent exhibits provide profound historical context. Afterwards, explore the vibrant Nyamirambo neighborhood, Kigali's most colourful quarter. Visit a local women's cooperative and enjoy a traditional lunch if time permits. Evening: Check in to your luxury hotel in Kigali. Freshen up and enjoy a welcome briefing from your guide about the adventure ahead. Dinner is served at the hotel's restaurant. Overnight at Kigali Marriott Hotel, The Retreat, or similar luxury accommodation.
Into the Emerald Heart: Kigali to Nyungwe National Park
After an early breakfast, we begin our journey south-west through the heart of Rwanda's tiered agricultural landscape. This 5-6 hour drive is a masterclass in Rwandan geography, taking us past terraced hillsides, tea plantations, and traditional villages. We stop at the Ethnographic Museum in Huye, one of Africa's finest anthropological collections, before descending into the vast Nyungwe forest. Morning: Early breakfast at your Kigali hotel. Depart at 7:00 AM heading south-west towards Nyungwe. The drive takes you through the heart of Rwanda's agricultural heartland — endless terraced hillsides planted with bananas, maize, beans, and coffee. Stop at the Nyanza King's Palace Museum to learn about Rwanda's ancient monarchy and traditional royal homestead. Afternoon: Arrive in Huye (formerly Butare) and visit the National Museum of Rwanda (Ethnographic Museum). This museum houses one of the most extensive ethnographic collections in Africa, featuring traditional artifacts, royal regalia, and intricate baskets. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Continue the drive south as the landscape transforms from tiered hills to dense, undisturbed montane rainforest. Evening: Arrive at your lodge in Nyungwe National Park. The humidity and sounds of the jungle create a primal atmosphere as mist rolls in over the mountains. Check in, freshen up, and enjoy dinner at the lodge. Your guide will brief you on tomorrow's early morning chimp trekking adventure. Overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hotel or One&Only Nyungwe House.
Primate Spirits & Suspension Bridge: Chimp Trekking & Canopy Walk
Today we enter the forest before dawn. Guided by expert park rangers and trackers, we venture into Nyungwe's ancient montane rainforest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities. Watching these intelligent primates swing through the canopy, hunt, and socialise is a fast-paced and exhilarating experience that contrasts beautifully with the quiet majesty of gorilla trekking. Morning: Early wake-up call at 5:00 AM with tea, coffee, and a light snack. Depart for the park headquarters to register and meet your tracking team. The chimp trek begins at dawn as the forest awakens. Your trackers use radio telemetry and expert knowledge of the chimps' sleeping sites to locate the troop. The trek can take 1-4 hours through dense vegetation. Once found, you spend up to one hour observing the chimps' complex social interactions. Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and some rest. After lunch, head to the Uwinka Visitor Center for the Canopy Walkway experience. This 160-meter-long suspension bridge hangs 70 meters above the forest floor, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the ancient rainforest canopy. Look out for the Great Blue Turaco, Black and White Colobus monkeys, and L'Hoest's monkeys. Evening: Return to the lodge as the forest settles into dusk. Enjoy sundowner drinks on the terrace overlooking the Nyungwe mountains. A gourmet dinner is served with the sounds of the jungle as your backdrop. Overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hotel or One&Only Nyungwe House.
The Scenic Divide: Nyungwe to Volcanoes via Lake Kivu
We bid farewell to the southern rainforest and travel north along the spectacular shores of Lake Kivu. The road winds through fishing villages, tea estates, and pine forests with constant views of the lake's turquoise waters and the distant mountains of Congo. This is one of the most scenic drives in East Africa, culminating in the dramatic arrival at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes. Morning: Breakfast at the lodge and final morning in Nyungwe. Optional early morning nature walk along the Igishigishigi Trail before departure. Depart north along the Congo-Nile Divide, a scenic route that follows the watershed between the Nile and Congo river basins. The road offers spectacular views of the Nyungwe massif and the distant Lake Kivu. Afternoon: Stop for lunch in Rubavu (Gisenyi), Lake Kivu's premier beach resort town. Enjoy fresh tilapia from the lake while looking out over the water towards the Democratic Republic of Congo. Take a short stroll along the beach or visit the local market. Continue the drive north through rolling tea plantations and pine forests as the Five Volcanoes of the Virunga range come into view. Evening: Arrive in Kinigi, the base town for all gorilla trekking operations in Volcanoes National Park. The air is thin and cool, and the atmosphere thick with anticipation. Check in to your luxury lodge and enjoy a pre-trek briefing from your guide. Dinner is served with views of the volcanic peaks. Overnight at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel or Bisate Lodge.
The Ultimate Encounter: Gorilla Trekking & Return to Kigali
This is the moment your journey has been building toward. After a 7:00 AM briefing at the park headquarters, you will be assigned to a gorilla family based on your fitness level and group preference. The trek through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes can take 1 to 5 hours, but the reward is an unforgettable hour in the presence of a silverback and his family — an encounter that transcends the barrier between species. Morning: Early breakfast at 6:00 AM. Transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for the 7:00 AM briefing. You will be assigned to a specific gorilla family based on tracking reports from the previous day. Porters are available for hire to assist with gear and provide support on steep sections. The trek begins through cultivated fields before entering the bamboo zone and then the dense Hagenia forest. Your trackers communicate by radio to locate the family's exact position. Afternoon: Once the gorilla family is located, you have exactly one hour with them. Watch the silverback as he feeds, rests, and interacts with females and juveniles. This is often described as a life-changing experience — seeing your own reflection in the eyes of a 200kg silverback. After the trek, return to the lodge for a farewell lunch. Begin the 2.5-hour drive back to Kigali, arriving in the late afternoon for your departure flight. Evening: Arrive at Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, or transfer to your Kigali hotel for an overnight stay if continuing your journey. End of tour. We recommend booking flights departing after 6:00 PM to allow ample time for the drive and check-in.

Best Time to Travel
The clearest, driest climbing conditions fall in two windows: late June through October, and January to mid-March. Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the short and long rains (November, and April-May) bring wetter trails and lower summit visibility.
