Arrival in Kigali & City Tour
Your journey begins at Kigali International Airport, where a warm welcome awaits you from your African Majestic Adventures guide. Kigali is one of the most interesting cities in Africa, known for its rapid development and clean streets. After a brief orientation, check into your hotel and embark on a comprehensive city tour. The most important stop is the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a place of historical significance and deep emotion that provides context for understanding Rwanda's remarkable recovery. Morning: Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Brief orientation of the city known as the "Singapore of Africa" for its cleanliness and order. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial - a profoundly moving UNESCO-listed site that chronicles the 1994 genocide and showcases Rwanda's incredible journey of reconciliation and unity. Afternoon: Explore Kigali's vibrant suburbs including Kimironko Market, where you can see local life in action. Visit the Inema Arts Center to witness the creativity of young Rwandan artists. Drive through the city's rolling hills and fashionable neighborhoods, stopping at panoramic viewpoints for photos. Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant overlooking the city's twinkling lights. Enjoy authentic Rwandan cuisine featuring dishes like brochettes, plantains, and sambaza. Overnight at your hotel in Kigali.
Kigali to Nyungwe via Butare - Cultural Heritage
Leaving the capital behind, head south toward Huye (formerly Butare), the intellectual and cultural hub of Rwanda. Visit the King's Palace Museum at Nyanza to see the traditional royal residence and meet the majestic Inyambo cattle. Continue to the National Museum of Rwanda, the finest museum in East Africa. After lunch, drive west toward the lush landscapes of Nyungwe Forest National Park. Morning: Early breakfast and departure from Kigali. Drive south through Rwanda's famous terraced hillsides. First stop at the King's Palace Museum at Nyanza - tour the traditional royal palace with its thatched roof and meet the sacred Inyambo cattle, known for their graceful long horns and role in Rwandan royal ceremonies. Photo opportunity with these majestic animals. Afternoon: Continue to Huye (Butare) and visit the National Museum of Rwanda - the finest ethnographic museum in East Africa. Its extensive collection includes historical artifacts, musical instruments, and exhibits on Rwandan traditions and lifestyle. Enjoy a traditional Rwandan lunch at a local restaurant. The drive continues west through stunning tea plantations and evergreen forests toward Nyungwe. Evening: Arrive at your lodge near Nyungwe Forest. Check in and enjoy dinner while overlooking the lush forest canopy. Your guide will brief you on tomorrow's chimpanzee trekking adventure. Overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel or Nyungwe House.
Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk
Today requires an early start for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest. The park is home to several habituated chimpanzee families. Trekking to find them is an adventure as they move quickly through the upper canopy. After observing our closest wild cousins, experience the famous Canopy Walk - a 160-meter long bridge suspended 70 meters above a deep ravine offering spectacular views. Morning: Early wake-up at 5:00 AM with tea and coffee. Meet your guide and park rangers at the park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking protocols. Enter the ancient montane rainforest of Nyungwe - one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. Trek through dense vegetation, listening for chimp calls, as your guide tracks the movements of habituated chimpanzee families. The trek can last 2-5 hours depending on chimp location. Once found, spend one hour observing these fascinating primates as they socialize, feed, and move through the canopy. Afternoon: Return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, experience the Nyungwe Canopy Walk - a 160-meter long suspension bridge hanging 70 meters above the forest floor. Walk among the treetops for spectacular bird's-eye views of the rainforest. Look for L'Hoest's monkeys, colobus monkeys, and over 300 bird species including the great blue turaco and red-collared babbler. Evening: Return to the lodge as the forest settles into dusk. Enjoy a sundowner on the lodge terrace overlooking the forest canopy. Gourmet dinner featuring fresh local ingredients. Overnight at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel or similar.
Nyungwe to Lake Kivu - Scenic Drive
After breakfast, take a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Kivu toward Rubavu (Gisenyi). The road follows the contours of the lake, passing through vibrant fishing villages and endless tea and coffee plantations - one of the most beautiful drives in Africa. Upon arrival, check into your lakeside lodge and enjoy the afternoon at leisure. Morning: Breakfast at the lodge followed by departure from Nyungwe. Drive toward Lake Kivu through the lush southwestern region of Rwanda. Stop at a local tea factory to learn about the process from leaf to cup - tea is a major part of Rwanda's economy and the rolling green plantations are spectacular to photograph. The road offers panoramic views of Lake Kivu appearing between the hills. Afternoon: Arrive in Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi), the main resort town on Lake Kivu. Check into your lakeside lodge. Enjoy lunch with views over the lake. The afternoon is free for relaxation - swim in the fresh hippo-free waters of Lake Kivu, walk along the black sand beaches, or simply relax by the pool with a good book. Evening: Watch the sunset over Lake Kivu with a cold drink in hand - the view of the Nyiragongo volcano across the border in DR Congo is often visible on clear days. Dinner at the lodge featuring fresh fish from the lake. Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel or Paradise Malahide.
Lake Kivu Relaxation & Transfer to Volcanoes NP
Enjoy a relaxing morning on the shores of Lake Kivu. Take a boat cruise to one of the islands for a short hike or visit the local hot springs. In the afternoon, drive north toward Volcanoes National Park, where the dramatic peaks of the Virunga Mountains dominate the skyline. Morning: Leisurely breakfast and a morning boat cruise on Lake Kivu. Visit one of the lake's islands for a short nature walk or a visit to the local hot springs where you can soak your feet in naturally warm mineral water. The lake is incredibly peaceful and the views of the surrounding hills and the distant Virunga volcanoes are spectacular. Afternoon: Check out from the lodge and begin the drive north toward Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans). The journey takes approximately 3 hours through Rwanda's scenic northern province. As you approach the park, the dramatic peaks of the Virunga Mountains - Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura - dominate the skyline, creating a breathtaking backdrop. Evening: Arrive at your lodge near the park headquarters in Kinigi. Check in and enjoy dinner. Your guide will conduct a thorough briefing on the next day's gorilla trekking experience, including what to wear, what to bring, and what to expect. Overnight at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel or Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge.
Gorilla Trekking & Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village
This is the day of your life-altering encounter with the Mountain Gorillas. After an early breakfast, proceed to Kinigi Park Headquarters for your briefing and group assignment. Accompanied by expert guides and trackers, hike into the lush bamboo and montane forest. The moment you spot the first gorilla, all the effort is forgotten. Standing meters from a massive silverback is a spiritual experience. Morning: Early breakfast at 5:30 AM. Transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for registration and a briefing by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) rangers. You will be assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level and group dynamics. Meet your tracking team and begin the hike into the Virunga Mountains. The trek passes through farmland, bamboo forest, and dense montane vegetation. Depending on the gorilla group's location, the hike can take 1-5 hours. Porters are available for hire to carry your backpack and assist on steep sections. Afternoon: Once the gorilla family is located, you will spend exactly one hour in their presence - a strictly enforced rule to protect the gorillas from human disease. Watch in awe as silverbacks, females, and playful juveniles interact, feed, and rest. The experience is profoundly moving and often described as life-changing. Return to the lodge for a late lunch and well-deserved rest. In the afternoon, visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village where former poachers have transformed into conservation ambassadors. Witness traditional Intore warrior dances, drumming, and learn about ancient Rwandan herbal medicine. Evening: Return to the lodge for a celebratory dinner. Share stories and photos with fellow travelers. This is the highlight of your Rwanda safari - a day you will remember forever. Overnight at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel or Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge.
Golden Monkeys & Return to Kigali
For your final highlight, trek to see the rare and playful Golden Monkeys, endemic to the high-altitude bamboo forests of the Virungas. Known for their vibrant orange coats, they are incredibly active and make for a fun, engaging trek. After the trek, return to the lodge for a shower and lunch before the drive back to Kigali for your departure. Morning: Early breakfast followed by transfer to the park headquarters for golden monkey trekking briefing. These rare primates are found only in the Virunga Massif and are known for their striking golden-orange fur and acrobatic behavior. The trek is generally easier than gorilla trekking, lasting 1-3 hours through beautiful bamboo forests. Golden monkeys are extremely active, leaping between bamboo stalks and feeding on shoots and fruits - a lively and photographic experience. Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a shower and farewell lunch. Check out and begin the drive back to Kigali (approximately 2.5 hours). Your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport or your hotel in Kigali for onward connections. We recommend booking flights departing after 4:00 PM to allow ample time. Evening: Depart from Kigali with unforgettable memories of Rwanda's breathtaking landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, and warm-hearted people. Karibu tena - welcome again to Rwanda. End of tour.

Best Time to Travel
The clearest, driest climbing conditions fall in two windows: late June through October, and January to mid-March. Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the short and long rains (November, and April-May) bring wetter trails and lower summit visibility.
