D1

Day 1: Umbwe Gate – Umbwe Cave Camp (1,800m – 2,950m)

Umbwe Cave Camp (2.950 m)

The tour begins at Umbwe Gate, where you receive your permits and are greeted by your guides and porters. The hike first leads through dense rainforest, climbing steeply, past moss-covered trees, streams and exotic birdlife. After about 4–5 hours you reach Umbwe Cave Camp, where you rest and enjoy the view.

Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (2,950m – 3,950m)

After breakfast you continue the climb through steep rainforest trails and alpine heath. The hike takes 5–6 hours and includes demanding ascents and rocky sections. In the afternoon you reach Barranco Camp, known for the famous Barranco Wall — a moderate scramble offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,950m – 4,200m)

Today the climb leads through the Karanga Valley. The hike takes 4–5 hours, past lava fields and alpine vegetation. The steep but manageable ascent builds your fitness for the next day. In the afternoon you reach Karanga Camp, where you prepare for the climb to Barafu Camp.

Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,200m – 4,600m)

Today's route leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit climb. The hike takes 4–5 hours, partly steep, through lava fields and alpine landscape. At Barafu Camp you refuel and rest for the night summit tour.

D5

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp (4,600m – 5,895m – 3,100m)

Mweka Camp (3.100 m)

The summit tour begins very early in the morning, usually around midnight. You hike through rocky lava fields, steep sections and alpine barrenness to Uhuru Peak. The sunrise over the African continent is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. After the summit you first descend to Barafu Camp, refuel, and then continue on to Mweka Camp, through lush vegetation and mountain forest.

D6

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha (3,100m – 1,860m)

Moshi / Arusha

On the last day you hike 3–4 hours back to Mweka Gate. Here you receive your summit certificate for successfully climbing Kilimanjaro. Afterwards, transfer to Arusha or your hotel, where your 6-day Umbwe Kilimanjaro tour ends — filled with challenge, triumph and unforgettable nature.

Best Time to Travel

The clearest, driest climbing conditions fall in two windows: late June through October, and January to mid-March. Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the short and long rains (November, and April-May) bring wetter trails and lower summit visibility.
