The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenically beautiful routes on Kilimanjaro. It starts on the western side of the mountain and passes through rainforest, heath and moorland, lava fields and alpine desert. With 8 days you have more time to acclimatize, can enjoy nature intensely, and increase your chances of a successful summit.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your trip, day by day

D1

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Shira 1 Camp (approx. 3,050m)

Shira 1 Camp

After registration at the gate, the climb begins through lush rainforest. Along the way you can spot monkeys and bird species. Shira 1 Camp sits on a wide plateau, ideal for dinner and relaxation.

D2

Day 2: Shira 1 Camp – Shira 2 Camp (approx. 3,850m)

Shira 2 Camp

Today you continue hiking through moorland and heath vegetation, enjoying the Shira Plateau and the grand views of Kilimanjaro. Shira 2 Camp offers a quiet spot for rest and acclimatization.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp (approx. 3,960m)

Barranco Camp

The climb to the Lava Tower aids acclimatization. You then continue to Barranco Camp, which lies at the foot of the Barranco Wall. Along the way there are numerous photo opportunities.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (approx. 4,035m)

Karanga Camp

Today you climb the Barranco Wall, a moderate scramble with spectacular views. Afterwards you continue to Karanga Camp, a smaller, quiet camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (approx. 4,640m)

Barafu Camp

The climb leads through alpine desert landscape to Barafu Camp, base camp for summit day. In the afternoon, rest and preparation for the night climb.

D6

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (approx. 3,100m)

Mweka Camp

Early morning start for the summit. The climb takes about 6–8 hours. From Uhuru Peak you enjoy spectacular views over Africa. After photos and a break, the descent to Mweka Camp begins, where you recover.

D7

Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Return to Hotel

Hotel in Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast you descend through forest and open plains back to Mweka Gate. After official registration you are taken back to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha.

D8

Day 8: Rest & Departure

After the climb you can use the day for rest, wellness, or exploring Moshi or Arusha. Afterwards, transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

Best Time to Travel

The clearest, driest climbing conditions fall in two windows: late June through October, and January to mid-March. Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the short and long rains (November, and April-May) bring wetter trails and lower summit visibility.
