Nyerere National Park was created in 2019 from the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve and covers more than 30,000 km², making it one of the largest protected areas in Africa. It lies in southern Tanzania and is reached by road or by a short flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar.
What sets Nyerere apart is the Rufiji River and its chain of lakes. Alongside game drives you can take a boat safari among hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds, and guided walking safaris are permitted, which is rare in Tanzania's national parks. The park is one of the continent's strongholds for the endangered African wild dog and also holds large numbers of elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe and hippo.
Visitor numbers are a fraction of those in the northern parks, so sightings are rarely shared with other vehicles. The best time to visit is the dry season from June to October. Nyerere combines well with Mikumi or Ruaha, and with a beach stay on Zanzibar.
