Tarangire National Park

Tanzania

Tarangire National Park lies about 120 km south-west of Arusha, roughly two hours by road, and covers 2,850 km² of baobab-studded savannah. It is best known for its elephants: in the dry season, herds of several hundred gather along the Tarangire River, the only permanent water for many kilometres.

From June to October the park holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Tanzania outside the Serengeti. Wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, giraffe and eland crowd the riverbanks, followed by lions and leopards, and the park is one of the few places in the north where you may see fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk. With more than 500 recorded bird species it is also a favourite with birdwatchers.

Tarangire is quieter than its famous neighbours and is the natural first stop on a northern-circuit safari, usually followed by Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti.
