Akagera National Park covers about 1,122 km² of savannah, wetland and lakes along Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania, roughly two and a half hours by road from Kigali. It is Rwanda's only savannah park and one of the great conservation recoveries in Africa.
Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, so Akagera is once again home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Game drives also find giraffe, zebra, topi and several antelope species, and a boat trip on Lake Ihema brings you close to hippos, crocodiles and some of the park's 480 or more bird species.
Akagera can be visited as a day trip from Kigali, though one or two nights allow for early-morning and late-afternoon drives when the animals are most active. It is the natural partner to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, giving a complete Rwanda safari in under a week. The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the easiest game viewing.
