Kibale National Park

Uganda

Kibale National Park protects 795 km² of tropical forest in western Uganda, near Fort Portal, and is often called the primate capital of the world. Thirteen primate species live here, including around 1,500 chimpanzees.

Chimpanzee tracking starts from the Kanyanchu visitor centre, with morning and afternoon departures. Small groups walk with a ranger guide until they locate a habituated community, then spend one hour watching the chimps feed, groom and call in the canopy. For a longer experience, the chimpanzee habituation option lets you spend most of a day in the forest with researchers and trackers.

Other primates you are likely to see include red colobus, black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkey and grey-cheeked mangabey. The nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a community-run walk that is excellent for birds and monkeys. Kibale fits naturally into a western Uganda circuit with Queen Elizabeth National Park and gorilla trekking in Bwindi.
