Arrival & Afternoon Game Drive

Mikumi Area Lodge

Your Mikumi adventure begins with a morning departure from Dar es Salaam. Drive west along the A7 highway through charming Tanzanian villages and lush landscapes. Arrive at Mikumi National Park by midday, check into your lodge, and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive across the legendary Mkata Floodplain - a vast open grassland that supports an incredible concentration of wildlife. Morning: Depart Dar es Salaam at 7:00 AM after breakfast. The scenic 4-5 hour drive west takes you through the Morogoro region, passing traditional villages, sisal plantations, and the majestic Uluguru Mountains. Your guide will provide commentary on Tanzanian culture, history, and the ecosystems you pass through. Comfortable stop at Morogoro town for refreshments. Afternoon: Arrive at Mikumi National Park around midday. Check in at your lodge and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch. At 3:00 PM, depart for your first afternoon game drive across the Mkata Floodplain. This vast open grassland, reminiscent of the Serengeti, is home to large herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala, and eland. Lions are frequently spotted on the floodplain, and elephants are commonly seen near water sources. Evening: Return to the lodge as the sun sets over the African bush. Freshen up and enjoy dinner under the stars. Many lodges offer panoramic views of the park. Listen to the sounds of the African night - the distant roar of a lion or the whoop of a hyena. Your guide will brief you on the next day's full-day safari adventure.

Full-Day Safari in Mikumi

Mikumi Area Lodge

Today is devoted entirely to exploring Mikumi's diverse habitats. Rise early for a sunrise game drive when predators are most active. Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast and midday rest. In the late afternoon, venture out again for another game drive targeting different areas of the park. Between drives, enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot within the park. Morning: Early wake-up call at 5:30 AM with tea and coffee. Depart at 6:00 AM for a sunrise game drive - the best time to see predators on the move. Your expert guide will track lion prides, search for leopards in riverine forests, and spot hyenas returning to their dens. The morning light over the Mkata Floodplain is spectacular for photography. Look out for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and the park's rich birdlife including lilac-breasted rollers, African fish eagles, and yellow-billed storks. Afternoon: Return to the lodge for a full breakfast at 10:00 AM. Relax by the pool or enjoy the lodge facilities during the heat of the day. Picnic lunch at 12:30 PM, then depart at 3:00 PM for the afternoon game drive. Explore different sectors of the park - the miombo woodlands for sable antelope and greater kudu, or the hippo pools for close encounters with these massive aquatic mammals. The afternoon light creates dramatic photography conditions. Evening: Sundowner drinks at a scenic viewpoint within the park - watch the sun sink below the horizon as elephants and buffalo gather at waterholes. Return to the lodge after dark using a spotlight (red filter) to spot nocturnal wildlife. Enjoy a farewell dinner at the lodge, sharing the day's incredible sightings with your guide and fellow travellers.

Morning Game Drive & Departure

One final adventure awaits - an early morning game drive through the misty floodplain as the park awakens. This is often the most productive time for wildlife photography. Return for a full breakfast, check out, and depart for Dar es Salaam with a stop for lunch en route. Arrive in Dar es Salaam by late afternoon with unforgettable memories of Tanzania's Little Serengeti. Morning: Pre-dawn wake-up at 5:30 AM for tea and coffee. Depart at 6:00 AM for a final game drive through the Mkata Floodplain as the first light illuminates the savannah. This is prime time for spotting predators returning from their night hunts. The cool morning air keeps animals active longer - expect excellent sightings. Photography conditions are at their best with the golden sunrise and low-angle light. Afternoon: Return to the lodge at 9:00 AM for a full breakfast. Check out and depart for Dar es Salaam at 10:00 AM. The return journey takes you back through Morogoro with a stop for lunch at a local restaurant (included). Arrive in Dar es Salaam by approximately 4:00-5:00 PM. Your guide will drop you at your hotel or at Julius Nyerere International Airport for onward connections. End of tour. Evening: Arrive back in Dar es Salaam with incredible photos and memories of your Mikumi safari. We recommend booking any departing flights after 7:00 PM to allow ample time.
