Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park, protecting about 3,840 km² of savannah, woodland and riverine forest in the north-west of the country. It is named after the falls where the Victoria Nile forces its way through a gap only seven metres wide and drops 43 metres into the pool below.

A boat cruise to the base of the falls is the highlight for most visitors, passing hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants and a great variety of waterbirds, with a chance of the rare shoebill in the delta. Game drives on the northern bank find Rothschild's giraffe, lion, buffalo, Uganda kob and Jackson's hartebeest, and chimpanzees can be tracked in the neighbouring Budongo Forest.

The drive from Kampala or Entebbe takes five to six hours and is usually broken at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda to see white rhinos in the wild. Murchison Falls is often combined with gorilla trekking in Bwindi and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale. The dry months of December to February and June to September are best for game viewing.
