Mikumi National Park

Tanzania

Mikumi National Park is the most accessible safari park from Dar es Salaam, about 283 km and four to five hours west by road. At 3,230 km² it is one of Tanzania's larger parks and shares a border with Nyerere National Park to the south.

The heart of Mikumi is the Mkata Floodplain, an open grassland often compared to the Serengeti, where you can expect elephants, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and impala, along with resident lions and, with luck, leopard and African wild dog. Hippo pools near the main gate give close views of hippos and crocodiles, and more than 400 bird species have been recorded.

Because it is easy to reach, Mikumi suits short safaris of two or three days, including trips that start from Zanzibar. It also combines well with the waterfalls and forest hikes of the neighbouring Udzungwa Mountains, or with Ruaha and Nyerere on a longer southern-circuit safari. Game viewing is best in the dry season from June to October.
